A good kebab lunch deserves a little space in your day. Bayramoğlu Döner and Şehzade Cağ Kebap are two places to build that pause around, but they are not interchangeable. One takes you to Kavacık on the Asian side for wood-fired döner; the other fits neatly into a morning around Sirkeci and the old city.

Start with what you want to eat, then look at the journey. Trying both on separate days makes more sense than spending one afternoon crossing Istanbul from one meat-heavy lunch to another.

Which restaurant should you choose?

Your plan Our pick What to order
A dedicated döner outing on the Asian side Bayramoğlu Döner A portion of döner, or döner over rice
Lunch between the old city’s sights Şehzade Cağ Kebap Cağ kebab on skewers
A handheld lunch Either, if it fits your route Compare the döner wrap at Bayramoğlu with the cağ wrap at Şehzade
Only one day in Sultanahmet and Eminönü Şehzade Cağ Kebap Keep the journey short and leave more time for the city

Bayramoğlu Döner: make lunch the destination

Address: Rüzgarlıbahçe Mahallesi, Cumhuriyet Caddesi No: 2, Beykoz, Istanbul. Open Bayramoğlu Döner in Google Maps.

The reason to come is straightforward: döner cooked over wood fire. Bayramoğlu’s restaurant website describes its layered, thin-cut yaprak döner and oak-wood cooking. This is a useful choice when the meat itself is what you want to try, rather than choosing a restaurant with a sprawling menu for everyone to browse.

What to order

The English menu offers döner by the portion, over rice, in a wrap and in half a bread loaf. The wraps and bread options have different meat weights, so compare the size as well as the format. Rice, fries, drinks and desserts also appear on the menu.

For a first visit, a plate is the simplest way to make the döner the centre of the meal. Choose the rice version if that is the lunch you feel like, rather than ordering several extras before you know how hungry you are. A wrap is handier when you would prefer something compact. Neither choice needs to turn into an elaborate order.

Ask what accompanies your chosen dish when you order. If you would like a sweet finish, look at the menu after the main course rather than committing to everything at once.

How to fit it into the day

Bayramoğlu is in the Kavacık area of Beykoz, inland from the Bosphorus. Plan the final road journey from the shore before leaving, especially if you also have a timed ticket or airport transfer later.

For a food-led day, you could pair lunch with time around Anadolu Hisarı or Küçüksu. Treat these as separate stops with transport between them, not as a continuous riverside stroll from the restaurant. Our Bosphorus guide will help you choose the waterside part of the outing.

If your day is already full of Sultanahmet sights, save Bayramoğlu for another day. There is no need to spend your afternoon watching traffic simply to tick off a restaurant name.

Şehzade Cağ Kebap: a proper lunch in Sirkeci

Address: Hoca Paşa Mahallesi, Hocapaşa Camii Sokak No: 6, D: 4, Fatih, Istanbul. Open Şehzade Cağ Kebap in Google Maps.

Şehzade is the easier choice when you are exploring the historic peninsula. The restaurant’s name tells you what to order: cağ kebab, not ordinary vertical-spit döner. The Erzurum speciality is cooked on a horizontal spit and served on smaller skewers, as the regional development agency’s Erzurum food guide explains.

Start with the skewers

Şehzade’s restaurant menu lists its cağ kebab portion as two skewers and 100 grams. There is also a cağ kebab wrap, with soup, salad, ezme and drinks listed separately. Order the number of portions you actually want, and ask how an additional skewer would be charged before agreeing to more.

We would start with the skewer version here: it makes the difference from a familiar döner wrap clear. You can take your time over the meat and decide whether you want another portion, rather than ordering a large meal immediately. A wrap is still a sensible option if that is how you prefer to eat.

For dessert, the menu includes kadayıf dolması. GoTürkiye’s Erzurum food introduction describes the walnut-filled shredded pastry, fried and finished with syrup. It is a different end to lunch from another slice of baklava. Share if you only want a taste, and ask about ingredients if nuts, eggs or dairy are a concern.

Turn lunch into an old-city walk

Sirkeci works well between a morning at Gülhane or the museums and an afternoon around the Spice Bazaar. Lunch gives you a natural seated break before continuing toward Eminönü and the water.

You do not need to bookend it with two major attractions. Browse the surrounding streets, eat, then choose a ferry or a walk over Galata Bridge if you still have energy. If you are heading back uphill toward Sultanahmet, leave yourself a little breathing room after the meal rather than chasing the next ticket time.

A few useful words at the table

Porsiyon means a portion; dürüm is a wrap; pilav is rice. Ayran is a yoghurt drink, while su is water. These words help you distinguish the main dish from the things alongside it.

Look at the current menu before ordering, particularly when comparing portions with different weights. Ask about marinades and accompaniments for any dietary needs. Then put the phone away for a while: lunch can be part of enjoying Istanbul, not just the gap between sightseeing stops.
